Step #3. Naming your Blog.(Very IMPORTANT!)

Now, depending on what your Blog is about your going to want to use your target ‘Keywords’ within the name of your Blog, its description and the URL.

And there’s a good reason for this simply because this is what the Search Engine spiders are going to see first.

They’ll first see them within your Blog name which is at the top of your Blog that your visitors see, they’ll see them within your description of your Blog and then they’ll see them within your Blog URL that you choose.

By using your ‘Target Keywords’ within those areas I just outlined, thats what the SE’s will use to index your Blog under so when someone does a search for those target keywords, guess whose Blog will pop-up within the results depending on your competition?

Step #5. Locating your RSS Feed URL.

What can I say, I always leave the Best for last.

Assuming your still within the Blogger.com ‘Posting’ area you’ll notice a bunch of tabs at the top labelled, Posting, Settings, Template and View Blog.

Click on the ‘Settings’ tab.

This will take you to a sub-menu with a bunch of other options.

Out of all those options click on the one that says… “Site Feed”.

And there it is.

There is nothing wrong with having a personal blog about your personal thoughts on things, but if you are presenting yourself as a form of expert on a specific topic, then you will have to persuade readers that you have a right to do so. You should use your ‘About’ page to do that.

Another tip you should take is to claim your blog with Technorati. This registers it as yours with Technorati, and you can get a whole load more visitors. If you have a website then don’t get lazy and be content to run your blog from a hosting site such as wordpress.com. It is better to download the software from wordpress.org, and host your own blog. You have much more control over the look and feel of it, and can use any of the thousands of plugins that are available online. You can also use any template you want, or even design your own. That way you get total customization of your blog pages, and can make it more distinctive than the majority hosted on WordPress or Blogger’s site. These are the two main tips that any blogger should take if they intend to blog seriously. However, was I to provide the third most important tip for anybody interested in blogging, then it would be to monetize your blog. Don’t blog for nothing. If your blog concerns a specific niche subject you can likely throw up one or two affiliate programs on your sidebar so that they appear with your new posts. A three column blog is useful for this, since your regular sidebar will generally be full of permanent links.

If you monetize using Adsense, a three column layout is even more essential, since you will want a vertical block down one of the columns, in addition to some at the bottom and the middle. A good Adsense layout would be a column to the left or right of the main text column containing a vertical ad unit, a horizontal link unit at the bottom of the blog, and also a horizontal ad unit at the bottom of the latest post. You could also include a search box at the top or bottom of your main sidebar that allows a search either on Google, from which you get income, or on your blog.

You could also include one of your websites as a second search option, providing three altogether. The income might not be a lot, but most blogs with a few hundred visitors a day should be able to make from $10 to $20 daily minimum, depending on the niche. All you need are a few blogs like that.

These are my three main blogging tips. Yours would likely be different, since blogging is a very personal thing, but if you take these three on board you will likely find that you will get more visitors, have more fun and also be able to put a bit put aside for the holidays or that unexpected bill that always comes at the wrong time.

The blogosphere is a meritocracy! Does the cream rise to the top? Of course it does but outside of the world of the dairy, a lot depends on how you define cream. If you consider the those bloggers who have the highest readership to be the ?best? than yes, the blogosphere is a meritocracy with readership being the ‘payoff’ for being the best. The best, however, is not always the most popular. You will, while surfing, run across some extremely intelligent, extremely poignant and extremely erudite bloggers who have a very small readerships, as evidenced by very few, if any, comments to their posts. That can be explained by those blogger’s lack of willingness to ‘play the game’ that must be played to attract a large readership, e.g., aggressively promoting their blogs, spending many times more hours reading and commenting on other’s blogs than they spend writing for their own, listing their blog on every available directory, etc.. Every one of us has a different definition of success, to some, a large readership is adequate success, to some using their blog as a money-making device and actually making some money is the ultimate success while to others, like those with an intentionally low profile, feel that simply creating posts that are perfect expressions of what they want to say is reward enough.

How on earth could you? It would be like setting up an offline business and expecting it to succeed without anyone picking up the phone to call you or walking in through your companies’ front door.

Makes sense doesn’t it? Of course it does but the majority of prospects I deal with respond with shock horror when I tell them that now that they have set up their business websites they will have to buy leads or work hard to obtain them.

Leads are the lifeblood of your business and a highly targeted prospect can be worth $1000s, especially if you are involved in network marketing.

The way I see it, there are a few things you need to do to qualify leads and turn them into your customers or downline.

Firstly you need to obtain them, and as I can only share my own experiences, I will tell you what I do.

1) I buy leads – This is the simplest way to get leads and obviously will take the least amount of work to do this, because you are buying them from other sources and sending them to your business. These are usually raw leads, meaning they are people interested in starting an online business but not sure how to go about it nor with which company to proceed. It is up to you to convince them to use your product or service to do this.

2) I add them to my followup system – After buying leads you MUST add these prospects to some sort of followup system. This is basic stuff and if you don’t do it you won’t succeed.

There is absolutely no point in buying leads unless you followup with them. You COULD buy them and send them one email with a link to your business. A very small % will actually visit your site, what about the rest? Adding them to a followup system with at least twelve further messages will help turn your leads into HOT prospects. Some of my autoresponders have up to fifty message with articles, tips and recommendations.

3) I send targeted prospects to my business websites from the search engines – Many of my leads come from top rankings in the major search engines. A full e-book could be written on this alone but basically I set up a domain – obtained hosting – optimised my website with keywords related to my business – submitted my site to the major search engines – added quality home business related content and began a reciprocal linking campaign which boosts my sites web ranking more than anything else. The greatest thing about these leads is they are HIGHLY TARGETED and they are of course free.

Again I have set up a web form at my sites to encourage my search engine leads to add themselves to my followup system. I can then get to work on turning them into my customers and downline affiliates.

There are of course many other forms of sending customers to your website but the two above combined with an effective followup system can virtually put your business on autopilot and free up your time for other projects. They are also the most effective ways that I have found to reach a successful income.

WHAT IS THE SYDNEY WORLD MASTERS, ANYWAY?

In case you are not familiar with the World Masters, it’s like the Olympic Games but it’s for older people.

Actually the Masters Games attract more participants than the Olympics, according to the reports. Personally I found that quite surprising. It certainly doesn’t attract the same level of sponsorship or television time but it does involve more people. And that’s great to see.

As our population ages, my hunch is that we’re going to hear more and more about the Masters Games.

Anyhow, because we live in Sydney and are not as young as we once were (nudge nudge, wink wink), my wife and I figured that setting up a blog about the Sydney World Masters would be a neat thing to do.

PIMPING THE BLOG

That is a funny term, isn’t it? Pimping. Making it prettier, of course.

I’ve done two things to make the blog look better.

1) Template.

Of course, there are thousands of free WordPress templates out there. Just search in Google for ‘free wordpress themes’ and you’ll find them.

Now some of them might look sharp and attention grabbing but they are not very well done in terms of SEO (search engine optimization). And by that I mean if you look at the source code you will often see a lack of H1 and H2 tags or more likely an excess of them – including the wrong things being tagged with those heading meta tags. If trivial content is tagged as with H2 or even H3, that gives misleading info to the search engines – and you can pay a penalty.

So these days one of the first things I do when seriously considering a new WP theme is to look at the source code and see if the titles of each new blog post are set in H2 tag. The title of the blog itself should be set in H1 tag (with H1 being more important than H2). Of course, when you are setting up your blog you would want to be sure that you put a keyword in the blog title, so it comes out in H1 tag – telling the search engine spiders in no uncertain terms that this keyword is what the blog is all about.

If you visit my blog and scroll to the very bottom, the theme link will take you to the download page for the SEOAdMax theme which I am using.

If you examine the source code, you’ll see there is one H1 tag and that the title of each post set with the H2 tag. Just as it should be. Nice.

2) Image ads.

Rather than leave a lot of Adsense text ads there, as per the original SEOAdMax template, I have replaced most of the ad blocks with “image + text ads” that promote high paying ClickBank products. The ads come from a free service I found recently and if you are interested in raising your EPC (earnings per click), you might also like to take a look at it.

There is a wide range of options including all the usual display sizes and colours. But what I really like is that they offer images for all the ClickBank products.

Or you can go with text-only ads. Incidentally these are displayed in a bigger bolder font than Google uses (and they are not context sensitive) which are two points that distinguish them from Google ads. In other words, these ads stand out… which is what you’d want since ClickBank ads typically pay you many dollars per sale… compared to the cents per click that Google pays.
