If you’ve seen Kevin Costner’s film the “Field of Dreams” you will remember how he was inspired to build a baseball field with the words “If you build it, they will come”. He built the stadium, and with a little faith, streams of visitors were coming to see his dream.

Sorry to bring you back to the REAL world but this isn’t “Field of Dreams” and you aren’t Kevin Costner. If you want visitors to your dream website and you want some measure of success online, you need to take some important steps to do so.

Without a regular supply of leads to your business then you just aren’t going to make it in internet business, period.

How on earth could you? It would be like setting up an offline business and expecting it to succeed without anyone picking up the phone to call you or walking in through your companies’ front door.

Makes sense doesn’t it? Of course it does but the majority of prospects I deal with respond with shock horror when I tell them that now that they have set up their business websites they will have to buy leads or work hard to obtain them.

Leads are the lifeblood of your business and a highly targeted prospect can be worth $1000s, especially if you are involved in network marketing.

The way I see it, there are a few things you need to do to qualify leads and turn them into your customers or downline.

Firstly you need to obtain them, and as I can only share my own experiences, I will tell you what I do.

1) I buy leads – This is the simplest way to get leads and obviously will take the least amount of work to do this, because you are buying them from other sources and sending them to your business. These are usually raw leads, meaning they are people interested in starting an online business but not sure how to go about it nor with which company to proceed. It is up to you to convince them to use your product or service to do this.

2) I add them to my followup system – After buying leads you MUST add these prospects to some sort of followup system. This is basic stuff and if you don’t do it you won’t succeed.

There is absolutely no point in buying leads unless you followup with them. You COULD buy them and send them one email with a link to your business. A very small % will actually visit your site, what about the rest? Adding them to a followup system with at least twelve further messages will help turn your leads into HOT prospects. Some of my autoresponders have up to fifty message with articles, tips and recommendations.

3) I send targeted prospects to my business websites from the search engines – Many of my leads come from top rankings in the major search engines. A full e-book could be written on this alone but basically I set up a domain – obtained hosting – optimised my website with keywords related to my business – submitted my site to the major search engines – added quality home business related content and began a reciprocal linking campaign which boosts my sites web ranking more than anything else. The greatest thing about these leads is they are HIGHLY TARGETED and they are of course free.

Again I have set up a web form at my sites to encourage my search engine leads to add themselves to my followup system. I can then get to work on turning them into my customers and downline affiliates.

There are of course many other forms of sending customers to your website but the two above combined with an effective followup system can virtually put your business on autopilot and free up your time for other projects. They are also the most effective ways that I have found to reach a successful income.

With more companies adopting blogs, we’re starting to see what works and what doesn’t work from a design perspective. As a cue from Jakob Nielsen’s article on the topic, here are thing problems I often find.

Bad headlines. They’re frustrating. Some bloggers like to get creative… but creativity can affect search engine keyword opportunities. The important thing is that readers have a hint of what the post is about.

Links. Readers like to know where links take them and most of us rely on the status bar, but sometimes that doesn’t help. Some experts say to use “click here” to help those who are newer to the Web and others say that’s wrong, wrong, wrong. It just depends on the content. When linking, try to pick the best words that give readers an idea of what to expect.

Calendars as the only way to navigate a blog and impossible to find archives or older entries are big problems. I almost always resort to search when I want to find postings no longer on the home page. Unfortunately, some blogs don’t have search. That’s why I put “archive” links in my sidebar in both meryl’s notes and meryl’s notes features. As my site goes through redesign, I’m making sure the archives are accessible especially in the features section. I found some old entries from 2001 that are still relevant today.

Bloggers must be regular. No bathroom jokes here, please. When a blog looks abandoned for a month… your audience is gone. They’ll take you off their feed reader and blogroll. If you plan not to do it again or take a long sabbatical… prepare to start over again when you return.

Keep the boss in mind even if your the head honcho. Always blog with a boss in mind. Will your boss (current and future) be offended by your posting? Not only do people get fired for their blogs, but also they could cost job offers. It wouldn’t surprise me if managers are Googling applicants while going through the interview process.

Junky URLs. Nielsen says having a typepad.com or blogspot.com equates to having a yahoo.com or aol.com email address. Some of the bigwigs use Blogspot or Typepad URLs. Guess what? I never remember their URLs. I have to rely on Google. So this makes sense, BUT I wouldn’t call it unprofessional.

Business blogging has many benefits and problems. Companies tread carefully when entering this new world. It’s wise to have policies on the approval process and what can and can’t be said. Like anything else in a business, blogs need to be evaluated to determine whether or not they fit the business’ model.

To find them, just go over to Google and search for your niche keyword plus ?forum? and you should get a list. Try to find forums with at least a few thousand active members.

Make sure to do trackbacks and pingbacks to other blogs that you have linked to so that they know about you. When people find out that you have talked about them, they will come to see what you said. So will some of their readers. Talking about popular stories from popular blogs may get you more than just a few visitors too.

Comment on other people?s blogs as much as you can (without spamming). In most cases you can put a link back to your own blog and people do follow these links. It is also good to target blogs that talk about the same subject as you, because then you will get targeted readers who are more likely to continue reading your blog. (Avoid using ?comment spam? programs as Google can track this and will penalize you).

Most importantly, you need to keep blogging! Nobody will return to a blog that is updated weekly or only occasionally. You need to add more content at least once per day, especially in the early stages of getting your blog noticed. This is hugely important.

Once you really start scaling out your new internet marketing empire, one of the first major obstacles you are going to have to cross is what I refer to as the “Content Crisis”. Everyone that I know, without fail who has built a successful series of small niche sites has at one time or another had to stretch a bit to add new, informative and entertaining bit of information to their website or blog. We all just hit a wall – it’s really that simple. If you cover a particular topic thirteen ways from Wednesday – at some point, topic burnout sets in. 1)RSS. Everyone who publishes online has some degree of knowledge (or should!) of RSS – which in our non technical parlance will simply refer to Real Simple Syndication. Essentially RSS, from a publisher’s standpoint, simply allows you to aggregate and collect information from around the web in small chunks, usually in the form of headlines and small snippets of content, which you can publish on your site, and will update for you automatically as the originators of the content add more items. Essentially, your site will be augmented with free information and content, published by other people which keeps YOUR site updated with a free flow of good information, AND benefits the other publishers as well as their content is effectively syndicated around the web, extending their reach and circle of influence. A win/win for both parties, and your readers too!

2)Blog comments. Many smart marketers have been using this method for years, and it amazes me how many people I consult with are OBLIVIOUS to this great source of entertaining and interactive content you can enjoy on autopilot. A good blog has an engaged audience. An engaged audience wants to be heard. And the ability to comment, allows them to be. They will interact with YOUR content, with each other, and with industry news. The buzzword going forward in the online marketing space is undoubtedly COMMUNITY. Strong communities make for strong sites, and even stronger bank statements..:-) If you are running ANY form of advertising on your site, do not even consider turning “comments” off on a blog install. Yes it is a pain in the butt to manage. Yes you will get SOME spam, but thankfully not much due to great anti-spam plugins readily available to you for free. But NOTHING kills a conversation quicker than a monologue. Your blog comments are a great source of organic traffic from the search engines and social networks, as well as a compelling force in keeping your one time visitors coming back often, interested, engaged and entertained! 7. Create Feedburner Pro account and enable feed tracking.
8. Setup Google acount for Sitemap, validate and prep for future submission.

WHAT IS THE SYDNEY WORLD MASTERS, ANYWAY?

In case you are not familiar with the World Masters, it’s like the Olympic Games but it’s for older people.

Actually the Masters Games attract more participants than the Olympics, according to the reports. Personally I found that quite surprising. It certainly doesn’t attract the same level of sponsorship or television time but it does involve more people. And that’s great to see.

As our population ages, my hunch is that we’re going to hear more and more about the Masters Games.

Anyhow, because we live in Sydney and are not as young as we once were (nudge nudge, wink wink), my wife and I figured that setting up a blog about the Sydney World Masters would be a neat thing to do.

PIMPING THE BLOG

That is a funny term, isn’t it? Pimping. Making it prettier, of course.

I’ve done two things to make the blog look better.

1) Template.

Of course, there are thousands of free WordPress templates out there. Just search in Google for ‘free wordpress themes’ and you’ll find them.

Now some of them might look sharp and attention grabbing but they are not very well done in terms of SEO (search engine optimization). And by that I mean if you look at the source code you will often see a lack of H1 and H2 tags or more likely an excess of them – including the wrong things being tagged with those heading meta tags. If trivial content is tagged as with H2 or even H3, that gives misleading info to the search engines – and you can pay a penalty.

So these days one of the first things I do when seriously considering a new WP theme is to look at the source code and see if the titles of each new blog post are set in H2 tag. The title of the blog itself should be set in H1 tag (with H1 being more important than H2). Of course, when you are setting up your blog you would want to be sure that you put a keyword in the blog title, so it comes out in H1 tag – telling the search engine spiders in no uncertain terms that this keyword is what the blog is all about.

If you visit my blog and scroll to the very bottom, the theme link will take you to the download page for the SEOAdMax theme which I am using.

If you examine the source code, you’ll see there is one H1 tag and that the title of each post set with the H2 tag. Just as it should be. Nice.

2) Image ads.

Rather than leave a lot of Adsense text ads there, as per the original SEOAdMax template, I have replaced most of the ad blocks with “image + text ads” that promote high paying ClickBank products. The ads come from a free service I found recently and if you are interested in raising your EPC (earnings per click), you might also like to take a look at it.

There is a wide range of options including all the usual display sizes and colours. But what I really like is that they offer images for all the ClickBank products.

Or you can go with text-only ads. Incidentally these are displayed in a bigger bolder font than Google uses (and they are not context sensitive) which are two points that distinguish them from Google ads. In other words, these ads stand out… which is what you’d want since ClickBank ads typically pay you many dollars per sale… compared to the cents per click that Google pays.
